What is coffee refinement for?
The processing of coffee beans is an important part of the coffee growing process and has a major influence on the taste and quality of the coffee. There are various processing methods used by plantation owners and roasters to prepare beans for sale.
One of the most common finishing methods is machine finishing. After the beans are soaked in water, they are sorted by a sorting machine called a finishing table to remove defective beans. The beans are then dried in a drying process to reduce the moisture content to around 12%. This step is important to prevent mold and bean spoilage.
Another refinement method is manual refinement, in which the beans are sorted by hand. This method is often used for high-quality coffee beans, as it allows the beans to be selected more carefully. However, manual finishing is more complicated and costly than machine finishing.
After processing, the beans are packaged and transported to the roasting plant, where they are roasted. Roasting is an important step in the coffee growing process as it releases the flavor and aroma of the coffee. There are different roasting methods used by roasters to achieve the desired flavor. After roasting, the beans are placed in sealed packaging to preserve freshness. Packaging can be tins, bags or vacuum packs.
