Homemade latte macchiato

We show you how to prepare and enjoy the popular Italian coffee specialty in your kitchen. The latte macchiato is a little more time-consuming to prepare and requires some practice, but it makes up for it and tastes simply wonderful. Before you get started, make sure you have all the ingredients and equipment ready.

Latte macchiato recipe: the technical equipment

If you have a portafilter machine or a fully automatic machine to prepare thelatte macchiato recipe, then you are already fully equipped technically in this case. This is because these machines can be used to make both espresso and froth the milk. You will also need a stainless steel jug. If you make espresso using an espresso maker on the stove, an Aeropress or other espresso systems, you will also need a way to froth the milk. Electric milk frothers or a good saucepan and a whisk are ideal for this. A small stainless steel jug with a spout for the espresso will make pouring easier later on. You will need a tall glass and a long-handled spoon for serving.

150ml - 200ml cold milk
or milk substitutes It's up to you which milk you want to use. Because any milk can be foamed! But we'll come to that later

approx. 25ml espresso
Whether you prefer to use a strong bean, low-acid coffee beans or a mild one is a matter of taste. It really depends on the quality, because the higher the quality of the espresso bean, the better the taste.

possibly syrup
If you like, you can of course sweeten the latte macchiato with a syrup to taste. Nutty or chocolaty varieties are ideal here.

Step by step to the perfect latte macchiato

Step 1 - The milk foam

To make the milk foam , pour the cold milk into a stainless steel milk jug. The jug should be about half full. Now bring the jug to the steam lance. First dip the steam nozzles deep into the milk and then turn on the steam. Now carefully pull the jug down until the steam nozzles are just below the surface of the milk and a soft "smacking" sound can be heard. You will see small air bubbles appear. Pull the jug down just enough so that the steam nozzles remain below the surface of the milk. However, this takes some practice. So don't give up!

Step 1 - Milk foam for latte macchiato

Our tip: If you are holding the milk jug while frothing and the moment comes when it really gets too hot for you, you can slowly turn off the steam. You should now have the perfect temperature.

In the end, the milk jug should have at least a third more content. Pour the milk into the glass to the brim immediately after frothing. Now set the glass aside. It takes about 1-2 minutes for the milk to settle and for the foam to settle well on top. This is enough time for the espresso to infuse.

Here you can see how the milk has settled under the foam.

When preparing in a saucepan, only heat the milk and never boil it. The milk should be at a temperature of 50-60°. Then beat vigorously. When enough foam has been produced, first pour the liquid part of the milk into the glass about ⅔ of the way up. You can use a spoon to hold back the milk foam as you pour it in. Finally, add the foam until the glass is almost full and an espresso still fits in. If you decide to add a syrup, pour it into the glass before the milk so that you end up with 4 layers.

Step 2 - The espresso

The espresso is prepared in the second step of our latte macchiato instructions. It is best to pour the espresso into an espresso pot with a spout, which makes it easier to pour in the next step.

Step 2 - the espresso for the recipe

Our tip: If you use a double espresso, you must reduce the amount of milk in the glass, otherwise it will overflow when you fill it.

Step 3 - Pour the espresso

As soon as the espresso is ready, pour it slowly into the center of the milk foam crown. The espresso should now settle on top of the liquid milk, creating the three layers. If you still have some foam left at the end, you can cover the "pouring hole" of the latte macchiato with a spoon.
